An ethical evaluation of philanthropic strategies employed by charitable organisations operating in Mongu district of Western Zambia
MUTEMWA, David
This study has been prompted by the fact that very little is known about the ethical aspects and operating strategies of charitable organisations in Mongu district of Western Zambia despite an influx of such organisations in the area from pre-colonial times. The aim of the study is to evaluate the ethical aspects of philanthropic strategies employed by charitable organisations operating in Mongu. Within social work, which is the guiding framework of this study, evidence of results alone does not satisfy the ethical aspect because ethics in social work are mainly deontological in nature, which means that the end does not always justify the means. The study endeavours to contribute to the discourse of philanthropic social work and, especially, towards a model for evaluating ethical aspects of philanthropic strategies of charities from the unique context of the charitable organisations operating in Mongu district of Western Zambia, which will also inform praxis in other similar contexts.

PhDr. Jan Sokol, CSc., Ph.D. 2020 ANNOTATION The increase in private wealth in our cultural circuits has been unprecedented which fosters growth in private philanthropy. Charitable giving has been on a rise throughout the western world, including the Czech Republic, where we can document long-term and steady growth in both the number of charitable gifts as well as in the amount donated. In parallel, on the beneficiary side, there is a stabilized sector of well-established civic organizations covering the standard array of charitable topics. We may state that following 1989, the Czech civic sector has been revived, showing - despite all challenges - most signs of healthy maturing. In this paper, we attempted to capture the cultural and social context of philanthropy from the point of view of practical philosophy. We examined the rich roots of philanthropy and described the processes of its institutionalization until now. We paid special attention to describing the current situation of philanthropic giving in the Czech Republic. On basis of the above, we debated some of the dilemmatic questions of today's philanthropy, such as selecting the beneficiary and donor...

Services in the Name of Good Rotary Clubs in the Czech Republic
Holas, Jakub ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
The thesis analyses the motives of charity and its various forms in the present society. It builds on the critical theory of "studying up", formulated by Laura Nader in 1970s. It considers the difficulties of ethnographic research in an unequal-power terrain, where the anthropologist finds himself in an unwelcome position. Based on a one-year long research of Rotary clubs, the thesis examines the question of whether the charity is a pure act of altruism, following of self-interest, or a combination of both. Charity has lost its significance from its original Christian form over time. Today, it takes the form of a successful marketing tool. For someone it may mean caring for the disadvantaged, for another a simple tool to ease his conscience; for others a convenient pretext for the setting up of a private club. Rotary International is a worldwide network of private clubs, among its members are leaders in the financial sector, health care, public administration, journalism and science and research. One can therefore examine the Rotary club from an anthropological point of view of emerging capitalism in the...
